Sarge is a pretty boy between 2 and 3 years of age. Sarge originally came to Tier Haven in late December 2015 as a stray which limits our knowledge of his life prior to that point. Sarge was adopted in January to a family with young children where he has lived for the last 8 months before being returned to us. Sarge was the first dog for this family and they unfortunately were not prepared to provide the boundaries needed for a young german shepherd. Sarge was very attached to their children which became an issue in a close-knit neighborhood with friends coming and going from the yard. Sarge wanted to keep "his" kids safe but the family was unprepared for the protective nature of a german shepherd and unable to set boundaries for Sarge. The safest option was to return him before any bad behavior could develop.
Sarge is great with people and does really well meeting new people. Like as shepherds he is a very loyal dog and bonds closely with his family. Sarge has never shown signs of aggression towards anyone, adult or child, and actually his biggest issue the first time he was with us was being too rambunctiously friendly meeting people. Sarge has calmed down a bit in the last few months of being a family dog but is still an energetic young boy. While Sarge does well meeting new people he does require an introduction. True to the loyalty of a Shepherd Sarge is not the type of dog that will allow strangers into the yard or home and he will require a family that is prepared to set boundaries around that behavior.
Sarge does well with other large dogs but has not been around smaller dogs or cats. Sarge is a pretty rambunctious boy in the yard with a middle line personality. He likes to think he is dominant but if challenged he doesn't back it up. He is really quite the goofball with his antics and can be a lot of fun.
Sarge did go through in-kennel training while in his home however due to lack of consistency he will definitely require a refresher course with his new home. We strongly suggest training classes for both the dog and the person to help establish roles, expectations, and understanding. Obedience is a two way street between dog and handler.
Sarge is searching for an active home that will value his loyalty while setting consistent boundaries to ensure his ongoing success. If you would like to apply to adopt Sarge please email Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com for an application.
