About Bo

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black
Bo is a stunning young Shepherd around 6-7 months of age. Bo was born on a farm in Eastern Kentucky where he lived with a pack of semi-feral dogs until he was a couple months of age. He was transferred to rescue with his two litter mates and quickly set to overcome his early lack of socialization. Read this bio in full to understand Bo's needs in an adoptive home! Bo is a very sweet boy who is quick to warm up to every new person he meets. He enjoys getting to go out and meet new people at pet stores or on hikes. He lives with a 7 year old child and outside of typical puppy behavior he does extremely well with kiddos. He has also met various children in public and done wonderful. However Bo is not confident in himself and will cling to whoever he knows for comfort in new situations. The running joke is that Bo needs an emotional support human and reality is that overcoming a lack of early socialization is a process. Bo is going to require a strong dedication to continued structured socialization with a variety of new situations - people, places, and pets. In his foster home Bo is a typical shadow Shepherd who is always happy to be right where the people are and enjoys running in the yard with the other dogs or hanging out on the couch after a long day. Bo lives with other dogs and grew up with other dogs; however, he has zero confidence when meeting new dogs and is extremely vocal when he meets new dogs. Much of his confidence was borrowed from his siblings and without them (they have moved into adoptive homes) Bo is untethered and unsure. Bo is able to overcome his initial fear with new dogs and is quite the hoot in the play yard - often the laughing is at his expense. He doesn't really understand the concepts of playing with other dogs so the more experienced dogs try to engage him in roughhousing and it ends up with them dragging him. He is learning little by little though and is going to continue to improve as he gets more experience. Bo would benefit from having a more experienced dog in his new home but that certainly isn't a requirement as there are plenty of opportunities for socialization through doggy daycare and training. Bo is scared of cats and will bark as he runs away from them. We wouldn't necessarily recommend him for a home with cats however given proper introductions, boundaries, and training there is no reason he couldn't learn to live with a cat. Training and socialization are going to be requirements, not just good ideas, for Bo in order to ensure his success. He is on track to overcoming his lack of socialization however without continued work Bo could easily become a reactive dog which isn't fair to anyone. Bo is searching for a home that is prepared to commit the time, patience, and energy to socializing, training, and loving him. Bo has a lot of love to give despite his rough start and we know that in the right home he is going to be an amazing companion.
