Frequently Asked Questions

⇒ Do you adopt out of state?

Yes, we have no restriction on where our adopters live as long as they are able to commit to all travel related to adoption. This includes coming to meet the dog in Kentucky as well as returning them to Kentucky should the need ever arise.

⇒ What is your phone number?

Tier Haven does not have a phone line as we are a volunteer run organization with no central facility.

Where can I visit your dogs?

Tier Haven is a foster based organization therefore our dogs are kept in private homes rather than a central facility. This means we cannot accommodate drop in visits as there is not central location our dogs can be seen at. We require an approved adoption application prior to scheduling to meet, or adopt, any of our dogs.

⇒ What are your business hours?

Tier Haven is a volunteer run, foster based organization. We do not have any set business hours and our volunteers do their best to respond to all inquiries within a timely manner but are only human. Please be mindful of the possibility of longer delays over weekends, holidays, and turbulent times in the world.

How long does the adoption process take?

We advise allowing 10 - 14 days for your application to be processed however there are many variables that impact this timeline including ability to reach references and questions that may arise.

Can I apply on behalf of someone else?

No, we ask that the individual who will be the primary caregiver complete and submit the adoption application. We understand there are situations where technology limitations may occur and you may need to help facilitate a friend or family member receiving an adoption application. We are completely open to these situations and happy to discuss them as they arise. We do not allow our dogs to be given as surprises or gifts as we feel it is important that the caregiver be involved in the process of selecting a dog to ensure the success of the adoption.

Are any of your dogs sponsored or have reduced adoption fees?

No, we rely on our adoption fee to continue providing for the dogs in our care and cannot reduce it for any reason. It is very rare that an adoption fee is sponsored and if that occurs it will be clearly indicated on the dogs adoption profile.

I found a stray dog, what do I do with it?

All stray dogs are required to complete a stray hold through animal control in the county they are found roaming in and you need to contact your local animal control officer immediately. You cannot legally transfer a stray dog without a documented stray hold having been completed and to do so places yourself, and the receiving party, at risk of stolen property charges should an owner come looking for their dog. If you have found a German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois you're welcome to let the animal control officer know they can contact us directly if the owner is not located and the dog is in need of rescue. Thank you for helping this animal have a safe journey.

I need to rehome my dog, will you take it?

Tier Haven is happy to help you explore alternatives to rehoming your dog including finding a qualified trainer, dog walker, dog day care, or simply discussing common behavioral stages that German Shepherds, and other working dogs, experience. We are not able to accept owner surrenders though as there is an overwhelming number of GSDs in the Kentucky shelter system. If you would like us to discuss alternatives with you please email Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com with information on your situation and why you're considering rehoming your dog.
