About Dilly

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black
Dilly is a handsome young Shepherd only around a year of age who was surrendered at a shelter for being 'too much to train'. Dilly is right in the middle of the Shepherd fear period and is very unsure what is going on but he has shown himself to have a wonderful personality and is very much looking forward to going home. Dilly can be vocal when first meeting new people - this is part of that fear period mentioned. He will bark while hiding behind your legs. It is extremely important that Dilly be worked through this in a productive manner as this is a critical aspect of behavioral development. Once Dilly has realized that you aren't a threat to him or his perceived family he will love you for life. Dilly has been an absolute goofball and lover for everyone he meets. He likes to roll around, roughhouse, and of course sit in your lap for scratches. Dilly has been introduced to a 6 year old and while he responded in the same barking manner he warmed up to her very quickly and decided that he very much enjoys having a partner in crime. Dilly is a very large boy through and would do best with older children who are used to being around large, rambunctious dogs. Dilly loves other dogs. He was shocked to find that not every dog - particularly some seniors - want to play with him as he truly believes that every dog should run and romp. Dilly has perfected his play bow and is ready to roughhouse with any dog who will entertain him. He is particularly fond of a dog named Fred in his foster home as they roll and romp endlessly. Dilly has been tested with cats and did not do well. He displayed a high level of fixation and prey drive and would NOT be suitable to a home with cats. Dilly is a big puppy heart trying to figure out his role in the world. This is an important time for Shepherd development and being abandoned by his family has really thrown Dilly for a loop. He is searching for a home that is comfortable guiding a dog through the fear period, will seek the help of a trainer if necessary, and most importantly will show Dilly how to be the confident, social, fun-loving guy we know he is.
