Hobbs is a beautiful young Shepherd who has just turned a year of age and already known 4 homes in that short time. Hobbs is an awesome boy and has been moved around a lot through no fault of his own. He was purchased as a puppy by a teenager who quickly grew tired of him and gave him away - this started the string of owners that led Hobbs to our rescue when his last owners dogs refused to accept him into the home.
Hobbs is very well behaved when meeting new people. He is friendly but not over the top and will hang back a bit. He isn't the type to be in your face demanding attention although he will definitely be right by your side at all times. Unfortunately, Hobbs does have one bite on his record although he is not the type of dog to bite easily. According to what we have been told Hobbs was spending a week with a vet tech who was taking him to ball parks and helping socialize him. Hobbs was doing great so they took him to visit family and he was allowed to play with the children in the yard. Everything was fine because Hobbs is such an awesome dog however as the day was winding down they gave Hobbs a bone to chew on and one of the children (we are unsure the age) would not leave him alone. They were giving him hugs and laying on his back while he chewed on his bone and eventually Hobbs grew tired of this and snapped at the child. It saddens us to have to write this about such a wonderful dog as Hobbs is very well mannered around children when appropriate boundaries are put into place and had just spent the day playing with this child without issue. However, it is important for his future owners to know that boundaries are absolutely vital to the success of Hobbs as we do not want to see such a good dog failed by the parents. Hobbs has met a wide array of people from all walks of life and always responded extremely well. He is a loyal dog who simply wants to be near "his" people and does his best to please.
Hobbs has been around other dogs however he is very skittish with them at this time. The last home he was in had 3 other German Shepherds who packed up on Hobbs which is why he was surrendered to us to be rehomed. Hobbs is still trying to regain confidence with other dogs and can be defensive right now. He is going to need a home dedicated to helping give him positive interactions with new dogs so that Hobbs learns he doesn't need to fear new dogs and that he doesn't need to display false bravado either. Due to his history it is vital that Hobbs receive this socialization to ensure he does not become dog reactive. Currently he is being fostered with other dogs and is already making great progress in gaining confidence to interact with the other dogs in the house. Hobbs is NOT cat friendly as he has a high prey drive and automatically gives chase. We do not know if he would be suited to a home with small dogs due to this reason.
Overall, Hobbs is a phenomenal dog that has been failed by the people around him. He is amazingly well-behaved and well-rounded for all that he has been through and is seeking a family that will provide him a stable environment and the guidance to grow into the amazing dog we see in him.
