River is a beautiful soul who has had a rough patch in life. At 6 years of age River was surrendered by his owner after a divorce agreement required them to keep River regardless of ability to care for him. We don't know what changed to allow them to surrender River to the shelter but we are grateful that it wasn't too late for this gem of a boy.
River is possibly the sweetest boy you will ever meet and he does wonderful meeting new people. He is more subdued in public however on his home turf he can be very zealous greeting people. His personality speaks to having been a loved family dog once upon a time and he is eager to be part of a family again. River believes he is a lap dog and loves to be held as well.
River does great with the other dogs although he isn't too rambunctious or playful. He prefers to take a bone and keep to himself but is also open to playing when one of the younger dogs engage him. He does well being introduced to new dogs and doesn't want to make any waves in pack structure. He is very adaptable it seems and just tries to fly under the radar. River has been introduced to cats and kept his sweet demeanor. He did not have any interest in either of the cats he met nor did he offer to chase or bother them in any way.
River did test positive for Heartworm in addition to being extremely skinny. He has been started on our preferred regimen which includes Heartgard (Ivermectin) and a supporting supplement of Young Living ParaFree. It is vital that his adoptive home continue his treatment and we are happy to share all of the information we have on methods/options with an adoptive home.
River is a kind soul who is seeking a family who will give him the TLC he needs to recover from his neglect. He is a truly great dog and is going to make an amazing companion to any home.
