About Max

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black
Max is a beautiful male shepherd around 5 years of age. Max was originally a stray in January 2016 but was adopted out by the shelter. Max was doing wonderful in his new home until recently when some extended family came to visit that Max didn't know. According to the previous owners Max wandered across the road and when one of the visitors tried to bring Max back by his harness he snapped at their arm. They quickly decided to return Max to the shelter. According to shelter staff Max had been well behaved in January and was continuing to be well behaved so they contacted us to help him. Max has a very typical personality for a male german shepherd. He is friendly with new people, he is playful, he likes to bark and talk about it. Max doesn't like to be forced to do something, restrained/held, or pulled on. We can't say we blame him. Even knowing that he dislikes those things Max has a high tolerance level and is not quick to snap. It is something that any future home needs to be aware of though so that we can work to ensure he finds a suitable home that understands his limitation and need for continued training. Max has lived with children without any issues for the past 4 months. Max is extremely friendly when meeting new people and can actually be a lot of energy meeting new people. Max hasn't quite figured out the other dogs yet but is generally friendly. He doesn't engage in play and tends to keep to himself. We are unsure if Max has ever lived with other dogs. Overall, Max has a personality true to a male shepherd who was unaltered most of his life and allowed to rule the roost. He is a bit pushy and is used to getting his way but once he has a boundary set he respects it and adjusts well. Max is going to need a home that will be consistent in setting boundaries with him and recognizes his lack of manners as obstacles easily overcome. Max did test positive for heartworm and has started slow kill treatment along with holistic wellness support. Max is searching for a home that will give him the love, boundaries, and understanding that he has lacked throughout his life. He is a truly great dog and will give 100% to his "person" or "people" like most shepherds. Please email Tierhavenrescue@aol.com for an adoption application for Max
