Dixie is a pretty girl around 2-3 years of age. Dixie was purchased at 8 weeks old as a gift for a 10 year old girl. Unfortunately Dixie was then kept outside without socialization or training which led to Dixie having no guidance, boundaries, or manners. Dixie was then placed in a home with another dog, cat, and children. She did extremely well however Dixie quickly established herself as the protector of this family as well. They had never dealt with such a strong personality in a dog and did not provide proper boundaries for her behavior. Dixie became overly protective and without a fenced in yard the family was unable to manage her behavior. Dixie has had her world overturned twice in the last 6 months and is a perpetually confused girl. She is a very typical shepherd who needs a job and values herself as a protector. Dixie has lived with children and even visited schools with no issues. However if Dixie is not properly introduced to someone she doesn't respond well. She can be timid at times but generally takes her cues from whoever is holding her leash - if they are nervous she responds with aggression to protect them but if they are relaxed she is relaxed. Dixie is not naturally reactive or aggressive towards people but relies strongly on her handler for her cues. Unfortunately twice now she has been in situations with mixed signals and she doesn't know how to hold herself separate of that of her handlers. Dixie does well with other dogs and has lived with other shepherds. She is very playful once she warms up. Ultimately she is a person-dog though and will always pick her person over the other dogs. Dixie has also lived with a cat for a few months and done very well. Dixie is searching for an family with Shepherd experience to help her learn how to have a job and boundaries at the same time. She will require consistent training from day one to ensure she doesn't appoint herself protector again however Dixie also has lots of love to offer.
