Col. Mustard is a handsome black and tan German Shepherd male around 3 years of age. Mustard found himself at the shelter after the court ordered his owner to surrender 5 of their 15 backyard dogs. We know very little about their circumstances prior to surrender but know that Col. Mustard is a wonderful boy and is looking forward to a family of his own.
Col. Mustard approaches everyone he meets with a reserved gentleness and while he can take a minute to really relax he meets new people well. He is starting to really come out of his shell at his foster home and has decided he really loves butt scratches and going on hikes. Mustard has a kind personality overall and even at his most scared at the shelter was always kind to the volunteers handling him. He is perhaps best described as having a gentle soul. Mustard can be playful at times but is still figuring that side of life out for the most part. He does have more of a tendency to roam than most Shepherds but has been able to channel that into hiking as a way to safely satisfy his need to see the world. While he isn't an overly energetic or athletic dog Col. Mustard is a great hiking partner and enjoys the adventure - especially if it means using down trees as a bridge. Mustard has only met one child since his arrival which was a very dog savvy 8 year old. He was a bit unsure at first and kept his distance but has warmed up to her well. We don't know if Mustard would take up with younger, or more rambunctious, children since he seems to like a steady, quiet routine but he would likely do well with children 5 years and up.
Col. Mustard is about as dog savvy as they come and takes a very no-nonsense approach to playgroups. He doesn't really care what the other dogs are doing as long as they respect his bubble and don't pester him. He will provide appropriate reprimands to the younger dogs that push his boundaries and often acts like he needs to be the 'grown up' of the group. He is starting to settle in and explore play a bit but overall doesn't care for it. When the younger dogs get romping he generally asks to go inside or onto a porch away from them and we honor that. Col. Mustard has done well during cat testing although he doesn't currently live with cats. He was calm and uninterested with the cats during testing though and given guidance should adjust well to living with cats. He has not met any dogs under 30 lbs at this time and we do not have a way to facilitate this testing at this time.
Col. Mustard is searching for a family that will give him patience and guidance as he figures out what it means to be part of a family. He would also like to petition for a new name!
