Rex is a handsome 3 year old Belgian Malinois who arrived in rescue after his owners passed away. Rex spent a month confined to a crate as the family was unable to handle him and it is apparent that Rex has not been well socialized.
Rex can be aloof and timid still when meeting new people. He handles new situations much better if he is carrying a toy but does not like to be rushed or the center of attention in new situations. He is the sort to feel things out before getting involved - unless a toy is involved in which case he'll scale anything or anyone to get it. Rex is a typical overactive, mouthy Malinois with energy to spare. He has learned that pants, shirts, shoes, and humans in general do not make appropriate tug toys but is still happy to test the boundaries with a new handler. He is eager to please though and close bonding - he will also do his best for his person/people. Rex is still a wild child that needs an experienced home to channel his energy appropriately. He has been introduced to basic detection work and bite work but not developed in either. Rex is not appropriate for a home with children at this time.
Rex can live with other dogs and can get along if he is reminded of this fact. He is currently an only dog and does prefer that to sharing space. Rex is very toy focused and does not share well which can become an issue with other dogs who are also toy focused. Rex has a group of tolerant dogs that he visits with to help him work on his social manners although he prefers to ignore them most of the time. Rex is not suitable for a home with small dogs or cats.
Rex is searching for an experienced Malinois, or working dog, handler that can give him the structure, socialization, and job he is looking for. If you're the home for Rex please email Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com or visit Tierhaven.rescuegroups.org for FAQs
