About Dutchie

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Brindle
  • Current Age: 3 Years 9 Months (best estimate)
  • Exercise Needs: High

Dutchie is a stunning young male Dutch Shepherd estimated around 2 years old. He was a stray so we do not know his history or background prior to arrival at the shelter. Unfortunately he did have an incident at the shelter where he accidently bit a kennel tech when going for his toy. He is a very high drive dog and will require a home with working dog experience.

Dutchie is great with people overall but he can be aloof when first meeting new people. He is looking for someone to bond with though and is truly a sweet goofball. He is a wicked smart boy and is very eager to please even if he doesn't always know what is expected of him. He is quick to adapt but does like his routine and is the sort to stick to it even if the people aren't. Dutchie loves toys of all sort from stuffed animals to jolly balls to hoses - there isn't anything we've found yet that he isn't willing to fetch. He doesn't believe in returning the toy though keeping a stash is a necessity when playing with him. He is pretty good at 2 toy fetch and he rarely drops his ball without the incentive of another or food. Dutchie's guilty pleasure is chasing metal buckets which resulted in badly wearing his teeth while he was with Indiana DOJ training last year. Dutchie is great for grooming, loves to ride in the car, and is decent on leash manners. If a toy is dropped though all leash manners are forgotten and the toy must be fetched. Dutchie must be crated in the house. He will make a tug toy out of anything and a bored working dog is not something you want to leave loose in your home.

Dutchie has no concern for the other dogs in his foster home and happily ignores them to continue playing with his own toys. He has done well having dogs around while playing fetch and has not been one to steal toys or hoard them from the other dogs. He has yet to shift away from toys to playing with other dogs but has no issue coexisting with other dogs. He has not been around small dogs or cats at this time.

Dutchie is looking for a working home that understands the importance of multiple toys, training, and lots of exercise. If you're the home for him please email us at Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com or visit Tierhaven.rescuegroups.org for FAQs
